5 new Leaders in Running Fitness

6/7/2015

As you may know by now, 5 members of #TeamcFit have recently undertaken training to be Leaders in Running Fitness (LIRF).  Thank you very much to all of you for your support for us to do this.
It's exciting that our group is growing so that we need others to be trained in order to support fellow runners' progress.

Through the course we were shown ways to identify people's level of ability for the ABC's - Agility, Balance and Co-ordination. This did include a 'musical statues' style game so watch out for this one (more than a couple of us did wobble/fall over!)We were also encouraged to expand our ideas of what a training session is, it's purpose and different ways to deliver it.

There was a general feeling amongst the group (Lee, Dee, Richard, Kirsty & Natalie) that the course was definitely worthwhile. We all learnt what is involved in running.  We had sessions focusing on energy systems, how to instruct and explain as well as a few hands-on parts where we had to deliver what we'd just learnt. It was good to learn from others' feedback, and to observe others' leadership styles. I think we all came away having learnt something new.

This course has helped us all gain a better understanding of how to put training techniques together and how to adapt them. We learnt and practiced many a technique as well as leading small group sessions. There were equal amounts of theory and practical (which was handy as the classroom was a little chilly!).

With the practical sessions it did feel like we were put on the spot a few times. We were shown a skill then, minutes later, having to lead a small group remembering to implement what we'd just seen. It was challenging for a few of us, as we had to think on our feet, but I guess that's how it can feel on a Thursday night when the weather or venue change!

The tutors were friendly as well as knowledgeable. They were approachable and it was good to watch them demonstrate what they wanted us to learn.

To sum up, I shall leave the other fellow LiRFs to tell you in their own words what they made of it:

Lee: 'fun and memorable'
Richard: 'well delivered'
Kirsty: 'lots of useful information..... and thinking outside of the box'
I think all of us who went can echo Dee's words: 'I have more confidence in being able to plan and deliver a session'.

So, please, encourage my fellow LiRFs as they undertake to plan and deliver tailor made sessions for the fabulous group that is cFit!

Tonight we had the first our our LiRF fundraising events to help gather funds to contribute towards the training of 6 new Leaders in Running Fitness.

Richard Pemberton had been working hard in the background measuring and marking out the course ever since his knee operation some months ago and was confident it would be a success... and he wasn't wrong!

With the generosity of those that gave both of their time in volunteering as marshalls/support crew, those that came to enjoy the run and also those that dug deep and gave generously - Together we managed to raise a total of £190 - Awesome work everyone and far beyond what we thought possible with this one event!!!
